I called my new theme as “Chennai”

I just released a new theme “Chennai” on WordPress Theme City.

Chennai is a two column WordPress Theme with “Custom Image Header” and support for Tags, Gravatar, Multi-threaded and Multi Paged comments. Please click on the image on the right, to go to the theme page and download it.
The image on the header is a place called “Mahabalipuram“, which is a famous place for Temple, built in seventh century.

WordPress 2.7 Complete – Book Review

Packt Publishers recently contacted me.
They have released a new book titled “WordPress 2.7 Complete” and they wanted me to review it. I said “Ok, send me the book” and in the next few days, this book was waiting for me at my home.

I am a self-taught WordPress Theme Developer mainly because when I started doing WordPress Themes, there were no books available in the market. Then at one point, I even thought of writing a book for newbies, but it did not mature.

There are so many web sites on the internet that will teach you all about WordPress, but the problem is “there are so many of them“. Some of those websites assume you are a newbie while some of them think you are an experienced professional.
If you keep browsing the internet for learning about WordPress, you might probably end up somewhere you don’t want to be.

So, What is the best approach for learning about WordPress?

Just grab this book (and your laptop if possible) and go spend a few hours on a weekend. You will probably learn a lot more than spending hours of surfing on the internet.
This book covers a wide range of topics, starting from the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org and it even talks about how you would create a Plugin for WordPress.

Good Things about this book

This book is a guide to WordPress for both beginners and those who are slightly more advanced.
It has a dedicated chapter for “Developing your own theme“
Also has a chapter for “Developing Widgets and Plug-ins“, even though you would not need to write your own plugin, in most cases.
Most importantly, it covers “Administrator’s Reference” – Installing WordPress, moving your WordPress web site from one place to another, backing up, common template tags, and basic troubleshooting

So, whatever is your level of expertise with WordPress, you would still get something out of this book. Try it out !

It is not a theme issue, my friend!

As a creator of so many free and premium WordPress Themes, I usually get emails from people asking for support with their WordPress powered websites. I usually re-direct the users to my support forums, because most of the time, if I solve the issue for one person, it might help other people having the same or similar issues.

This post, I would like to pin-point some of the questions that people ask, which are in no way related to the theme they were using.

First thing to check
The first thing you have to check, before you decide if an issue at hand is an issue with the theme, is to go and set your site to use a different theme.
You can do this, by going to Appearance > Themes > and then picking up a different theme.

If you are still having the issue at hand, then it means, the issue is not at all related to the theme you were using. Makes sense?

Most common issues that are not related to the theme you were using
Issue 1: Uploading Images do not work with your theme
If you are having issues with uploading images to your post, it has nothing to do with the theme you are using.
It is probably because of a ‘directory permission’ issue at your wp-content folder or any of its sub-folders. This could also be because of this issue.
This is not controlled by the theme at all.
So, you can do the ‘first thing to check’ as suggested above, and I am sure, it will not be a theme issue.

Issue 2: RSS Feed does not load
The RSS feed for your WordPress site is not controlled by the theme that you are currently using. It is generated by WordPress, and most often, the feed becomes broken, when you have some invalid xhtml in one of your posts. You probably forgot to put some closing tags or you copied and pasted content into your post from somewhere else.
Again, you can do the ‘first thing to check’ as suggested above, and I am sure, it will not be a theme issue.

There may be other issues that are not related to the theme, and I will update this post as and when possible.
